Familienroute 5C Ueschene Valley

We drove up the toll road from Kandersteg, leading to the Innere Ueschene valley. We drove as far up this hidden valley as possible to park the van. After packing the climbing gear, we started our hike up the hill to the base of the climb.

As we approached it took a while to recognise which route was ours, as the only topo we had to go off was a hand drawn sketch. We eventually arrived and happily found the climb number painted on the rock.

The route was on stunning rock, and we thoroughly enjoyed the Swiss vista whilst we were climbing…

At the top of the 4th pitch, it started spitting… Then suddenly the heavens opened. El decided to keep climbing as we’d had such a poor season so far, it would have been nice to finally get to the top of something!
After a while we made the decision to back off the climb, the ‘interesting’ rock features we’d been enjoying on the way up were channels which turned the crag into a waterfall.

After a few interesting abseils we were back on the ground. We walked back to the van in the sun. As soon as we closed the van doors the heavens opened. We drove down the hill to Kandersteg swimming pool to enjoy a nice hot shower.

2024 has been a poor year of climbing for us – So far – But we’ll continue to have enjoyable days out… Climbing in the rain and abseiling down waterfalls isn’t too dissimilar to caving anyway!
